The Three-toed Woodpecker and the White-backed Woodpecker are some of the most interesting and also the rarest forest birds in Poland. In 2010, OTOP launched a survey of the Three-toed Woodpecker, which in 2013 was extended to sample plots selected for the White-backed Woodpecker. The survey was commissioned by the Chief Inspectorate of Environmental Protection. Currently, fieldwork is carried out in 180 2×2 km sample plots, selected within the distribution ranges of the two species.
